Are you thinking about lawn aeration? This video will explain when, why, and how to aerate your lawn.

Why should you aerate your lawn in the first place? That is because lawns with one type of grass don’t grow in nature. To keep your lawn healthy so that one culture can grow well, you have to do some things that nature does not do.

With aeration you are fighting compaction in the soil. Compaction can happen from the weight of water and snowfall or people walking around on the yard. Aeration opens the soil back up and allows nutrients and oxygen to get down to the roots.

When do you aerate your grass? Typically for the western side of the United States, in the “ber months” otherwise known as September, October, November, and September. You want to aerate the lawn when your grass is in its peak growing period so it can recover quickly—think early spring or fall for cool-season grasses, and late spring through early summer for warm-season grasses. If you have high-traffic areas or heavy clay soil, you will want to aerate every year.
